Green Dream gets more and more exciting event after event.
Here’s a recent evidence. With more and more awareness being created for Green Dream project, the response from volunteers has been overwhelming on July 5, 2008. A group of 50 volunteers have assembled at the Garudachar Lake (previously known as Purva Parkridge Lake). All implements necessary (spades, crowbars, etc.) were brought by the volunteers to start digging pits of 2’ X 2’ X 2’ size (on the lake foreshore). Our horticulturist stepped in to guide the volunteers plant over 120 saplings by the end of the day.
Saplings were made available by the Green Dream project team. The enthusiastic volunteers spent the day having great fun and learnt a lot about planting saplings that involved activities like digging pits, mixing manure and soil, planting saplings, refilling the pits, and using the water from the lake for initial watering.
It has been an exhilarating day for all the participants. It is certainly few more steps in the right direction. Tune in for more project updates
April 19: Field Surveys – Enthusiastic Participation From More Than 50!
Teams of volunteers (many of who were meeting each other for the first time) spent the entire Saturday in temperatures as high as 35 degree Celsius, visiting parts of the identified areas, identifying places where trees should and must be planted, and discussed with local residents and organisations. The response from everyone they met was very positive. Almost all the volunteers said that the exercise had changed their perspectives on trees.
April 22: Earth Day – First Tree Planted
As symbolic gesture, the first trees under project Green Dream were planted at the Siddhapura School on Earth Day. RBITC President Amarnath Kamath, Past President and the brains behind the Change India Movement, R K Misra, Project Co ordinators Rajeev Mehtani and Gita Sriram, environmentalist Mahadeva Gowda (who has also promised to contribute 20,000 saplings to Project Green Dream), several members of Rotary, and others participated in the event.
April 25: Indus International School – 10 Acres Offered to Create Forest
The first major event to invite contributions to planting trees at Rs 100 per tree was kicked off at the Indus International School fete. Over 200 coupons were taken by a variety of people, including children (who showed great understanding of the danger of Climate Change), resulting in a collection of over Rs. 21,000.
The school has also offered 10 acres of land to create a forest. Project Green Dream also plans to create a Butterfly park in the school, with the help of noted environmentalists.
